Avoid Tickets Without Drilling Your Bumper
The Platypus utilizes the existing tow eye in your bumper, so you do not have to drill any holes in your new car. This method of installing the front plate is common and legal in all states that require front license plates. At times when the plate is not needed, it can be removed easily, leaving no trace that it was ever there.
Fits Right and Will Not Alarm Your PDC Sensors
We have designed and tested hundreds of configurations on many current vehicle models and trim levels, this is not a one size fits all system. The model for your vehicle will sit tight to the bumper so that is looks like it was meant to be there, and it will also avoid setting off the sensors on your bumper (if you are having a sensor issue, troubleshoot it or contact us and we will resolve it!) Although it will sit close, the sturdy plate backing will not scratch your bumper no matter how you drive.
Tough Construction and Rigid Design, Made in the USA
The 12 gauge steel Plate Backing is full sized so that the edges of your license plate do not get bent in a car wash or otherwise. That plate has a black powdercoat baked on that will last forever. The Stud is lathe machines from 6061 aluminum and black anodized. We make them at the high end of the receivers tolerance so that the studs fits tight and stays put while you drive (this means that the stud will not go in without a wrench, like the stock tow hook does). The button head hardware is stainless steel, and uses an allen key to discourage theft. The hardware provided is the exact right length for your plate and will not stick through the back to scratch your bumper, if you would like to install a plate frame you will need a longer set of hardware for $1 here.
There's a Design for nearly every Volkswagen Vehicle
We make a specific kit for almost every car VW makes. If your car is on the list then you can be sure that we have worked with the local vehicles to test the fit. If you don't see your specific model, let us know and we would be happy to see if we can find a solution for you.
*While being one of our best selling models, the Mk7 Golf kit is trickier to get installed properly if you have parking sensors. The angle of the back plate needs to be adjusted so that it does not interfere with the sensors. If you need help, just send us an email.
*On the Mk 5 Golf, the towing eye receiver is hidden behind the fog light cover. We have a mount that will fit, but clean installation is a bit more involved. Shoot us an email for details.

Plate mount was easy to install. Looks great and I didn't have to drill into my new bumper.

I spent months of searching for a way to attach my license plate to may car without damaging it. I bought a few different tow hitch kits from other companies, but none would fit my car (due to volkswagen's counterclockwise threading). This fits perfect and I can finally stop getting pulled over for having my license plate in my front window!
Great product and superb customer service

Just ordered this for my wife's car. I accidentally ordered the wrong kit (I'm smart). I emailed them to ask and they sent the correct piece that I needed along with a return shipping label. Amazing service.
The mount itself is well-constructed and looks great. I like that it uses allen bolts for the plate instead of regular Phillips screws. I would definitely purchase this again.
Perfect Fit..AWESOME Product

Moved from NC to MA... No front license plate in NC, nor are there holes in my Beetle for one..
All I can say, is that IF a 63 yr old woman can do it,
ya'll CAN.. Piece of Cake..
Can't thank you guys enough for finding this product.. Keep up the great work..
Perfect Fit, Great Product

Moving from a no-front-plate state to a front-plate state, I wanted to keep my front bumper "hole-less"
The Platypus does exactly that with no issues and no hassles. Easily installed (not as gracefully as the mini-cooper instructional video) but got it done in about 5 minutes and am now legal
Thanks for the great product.

I had to add a front license plate, and didn't want to go through the bumper of my leased Touareg. This offered the best solution, and is fastened / fits so perfectly - I know it's not going anywhere! Great product, and wonderful customer service.
Fast shipping and great product

The shipping was very fast and the Platypus works great and no holes in your car's bumper!!
The best solution for a required front plate without drilling holes in your bumper
Posted by Kris on 2nd Nov 2015
- Item is great quality and arrived as it appears on the website
- Extension post tightens nicely in the tow hook hole
4 Stars due to very minor issues:
- The extension post was a bit short for my Tiguan, but easily fixed with a slight additional bend on the plate bracket where it attaches
- I added a tooth lock washer to the bolt that holds the bracket to the extension post for additional holding power

I own a 2013 GTI and a 2015 Sportwagen and ordered for each car.
Both plate holders look uniquely awesome and I was very grateful not to have holes drilled into the Sportwagens bumper. The set comes with a solid tow hook mount and strong plate bracket with plate screws.
The Sportwagen went on beuatifully, looks good and was super easy to install.
The GTI had an issue though. The screw direction on the GTI is reversed from the plate-to-bracket mount. So when the mount is tightened down and you try to tighten down the plate bracket it un-does the torque on the mount. The fit is so nicely snug between the basket and the car that without marring the paint, you can't get a wrench in there to hold the mount while you tighten the bracket.
I put a lot of pac thread tape on to hold it in place but I still had to be gentle with tightening the plate bracket to the mount. Now I have to check it every few weeks to make sure it's tight still.
Looks damn good though!
Perfect fit and a great product

Perfect fit, close to the bumper as could be and looking good. So glad I was able to save my bumper by finding this!
Simple, Clever and Easy to Install

The Platypus is a clever solution for cars (like mine) that have gone from a no-plate to a plate-required jurisdiction.
The OEM bumper mounted kit was long-gone. Screwing the plate directly onto that smooth bumper made me cringe. The Platypus uses the front tow-hook mount, a very innovative solution.
All parts are very robust and heavy metal...no cheap plastic stuff. This is a mount that's made to last.
Two thumbs up!

I needed a front license plate mount for my '09 Beetle and didn't want to drill the bumper. The Platypus is well designed, stout, easy to install, and solved my problem!
Works as described

we purchased this for a 2006 Volkswagen New Beetle Convertible. It works as described. I wish it came with a split washer for a little more security but it hasn't loosened up in a few days of driving. It was easy to install and only took a few minutes.
Quality parts, quality service
Posted by Unknown on 29th Apr 2015
Due to several threads I browsed through for a proper fitting license plate tow hook bracket, I decided to give Cravenspeed's product a shot.
Quality of parts is second to none. As the term goes, "you get what you pay for" is obvious in this case.
However, VW didn't make it so obvious that the bolt screws in COUNTER CLOCKWISE.
That's where their superior customer service came into play: quick and efficient - they confirmed that the part was correct for my vehicle and also advised me to try rotating the bolt in the other direction (why oh why VW).
Perfect, with adjustments

Installation was simple on my 2015 Golf R.
However, the mount was setting off the right outer parking sensor. I bent the mount out and it started to set off the right inner sensor. I decreased the bend to what I hope is now a happy medium. So far, so good. The sensors have been quiet for 1 day of driving.

Very sturdy product. I bought the 2011 VW Jetta Wagon series for my 2010 VW Jetta wagon and it fit perfectly. Easy to install but you will need two wrenches because the anchor base screws in counterclockwise & the bolt holding the back plate screws in clockwise so hold one in place while tightening down the other.

Just moved to San Diego, CA and got pulled over about 4 times within a month about attaching my front plates. The platypus mount attached without any drilling and true to description. Mount sits slightly away from the bumper to keep from getting scratched whenever I decide to take off the front plates.
the engineers said this would fit a Lotus Evora....

....and it did! Perfectly!
I've used these before on a Jag and Porsche, and I wanted one with the backing plate to be the same size as the license plate, and it was. Some other brands have smaller backing plates, making many opportunities for bent license plates.
I love this one!
Amazing product, way better than tape or drilling holes in your bumper!

Installed on 09 MKV GTI, did have to drill holes in my fog cover but those are $30 to replace if I ever decide to get rid of the car (never).
This was worth every penny spent on it. The quality of the packaging and presentation alone when you open the box was more than I could have anticipated. As you pick up the bracket for the first time you can feel the solid construction and heavy duty materials used.
For installation, well I was an idiot and tried to install the tow hook bolt onto the car by rotating it clockwise like any civil being would. Well, it turns out it needs to be turned counter-clockwise (it's madness) to be installed. I drilled a simple hole in the fog light cover the size of the tow hook mounting bolt and it went on without a hitch.
I would definitely buy another platypus for another vehicle.
Super sturdy, Easy to assemble and mount, looks Great!

I highly recommend Craven and this product.
The transaction was super smooth and the product shipped super fast. I appreciated the packaging as it kept all the bits from rattling about. I purchased one for each of our beetles because we live in a two-plate state. The quality is excellent and sturdy. I will need to be mindful of loosening due to vibration. Both my cars have left threads. I may put a lock washer on as a precaution. Also it does not block the fog light, which is nice.
So much better than the competition which I just threw away after 8 months.

I should know. I didn't know what to do when I was ordering a tow hook license plate bracket for my 2004 VW R32. First up on the search was Rho Plate and it looked fine. Neat idea, I'll bite. Ordered it and it came quickly. Install pretty straightforward. The cylinder that screws into the tow hook receptacle seemed strong and, in fact, not that much different than Craven. The tiny (and I mean tiny) allen-head bolt which held the license plate backing plate to the cylinder looked weak. The backing plate system was relatively thin and has many holes, allowing a more "universal" mount, which I guess could be a good thing. The holes themselves are dished, which allows the angle of the plate to be adjusted. Turns out it also prevents it from being very tight as well. Which meant that the license plate could swivel, leaving the plate cock-eyed until I REALLY tightened that little bolt. And for a time, it worked. The combination of the cylinder length ( a little short) and the way that the backing plate attaches to the cylinder meant that the mounting nuts holding the license plate to the bracket protruded enough to contact my bumper cover. I actually only used three of four and put a rubber bumper on the back of the bracket to cushion it. Great idea, poor execution. Then, a small amount of force popped the bracket free. Actually, the weak backing plate deformed, allowing the backing plate hole to stretch enough for the entire plate to come free from the small bolt holding it on to the cylinder. When I tried to loosen it (remember, it wasn't strong so I tightened it a lot.) The cheap, weak little bolt, a tiny allen head, was frozen enough that the tiny allen wrench stripped. I then applied the vice-grip method and snapped the head off. Tried an easy-out, to no avail. THAT is when I went shopping again. I shouldn't have had to do so after only 8 months or so, but I'm not getting stopped over a zip-tied license plate. So this time, I look around and find Craven. Seems like a better design. Cylinder looks pretty much the same. However, the bolt holding the license plate bracket to the cylinder is a big, nasty, stainless bolt. nice. The bracket itself is about 5 times thicker. the portion of the bracket which attaches to the cylinder is a thick cut-out which is slightly bent-presumably to hold the plate flat to the wind. It is somewhat adjustable with a big set of vice grips wrapped in electrical tape. It is powder coated with a nice semi-matte finish. There are actually four nuts welded or cast into the plate itself, so no big nuts on the back side. The license plate is held to the backing plate by four allen head, stainless bolts larger in size than the single one which held the entire Rho plate to the cylinder. Strong stuff. Installation was the same; screw in the cylinder (reverse threads on mine,) then that big bolt holds the backing plate to the cylinder and since the mounting surfaces are all flat (as opposed to the dished surface of the Rho,) it didn't need as much torque to hold it on. Stainless means it won't be an issue to remove and replace. I did adjust the angle slightly so there wasn't a chance of making contact with the bumper cover. I was able to use all four allen head bolts to hold the license plate to the bracket. Again, stainless means they will be strong but removable if needed.
IN SUM, a quantum leap ahead in design and execution. I just put it on this morning but I don't expect I'll touch it again until something else needs work. It really is that much better. To me, it is a total no-brainer. BTW, I wrote to Rho about my dissatisfaction and they offered to sell me some new parts while telling me they are redesigning it. Right now, after 8 months, maybe 15K miles (some in bad winter,) the only thing that looks nice is the cylinder-and that has the broken allen bolt in it. The backing plate is a mess, all bent up (along with my license plate due to the numerous times I had to readjust the thing before finally over tightening the allen bolt to avoid having to readjust the plate daily. The screws which held the plate onto the bracket are rusted in front and the nylock nuts behind (the three of them) are half-rusted. When it first failed, i considered trying to re-drill the cylinder, tap it for a new stainless bolt, and cut a heavier backing plate, which would have taken time and money and then to weld nuts to it would have meant more work and time. Instead, the Craven guys read my mind and did what I would have done. I don't think that there is much of a price difference between the two and even if it were twice the price, it would still be a better value than the Rho plate. So there you have it. A pleased customer. Oh, and despite the "7-10 day" warning about shipment, I had a confirm the next day and the package inside of 3 days. Like I said, no brainer. Good business too: give your customer modest expectations and exceed them. Done deal.

I was very impressed with their email representative, he took the time to make me feel as an individual buyer I was important to him. The Platypus License Plate Mount arrived quickly. Very simple and fast to install. The materials used are quality and sturdy. I will be purchasing another for my son's car.
