Hood Strut Install Guide - ND MX-5 Miata

Parts Included:

  • 2 ea hydraulic Struts 2 ea hood mount (Left & Right) 2 ea bay mount (Left & Right)

Tools Required:

  • Socket Wrench with 12mm & 13mm socket
  • or 12mm & 13mm Ratcheting Wrenches
  • Torque Wrench (optional)

Procedure

Let's get started

    1. With the hood up, start on the left side (the side opposite the hood strut, for stability) Using a 12mm wrench, loosen and remove the two bolts holding down the plate in the engine bay near the fender. EU customers will, instead of removing the blank plate in NA cars, need to install the mounting plate over the ‘Active Bonnet Actuator’ assembly held in place there. Be careful not to accidentally unplug or disassemble this safety system when installing these strut mounts.

    2. Fasten the larger plate labeled ‘L’ in place, ball facing toward the center of the car. Torque specs for these M8x1.25 bolts is approx 20ft/lb (~25nm.)

    3. Using a 13mm wrench or socket, ensure the ball is threaded into the plate securely.

    4. With the 12mm wrench, loosen the two bolts holding the hood to the mount. Place a thick shop towel or old cloth around the corner of the hood to prevent it from scraping the fender, or have a buddy handy to hold the hood for you once you've unfastened the mount.

    5. Place the smaller of the two plates labeled ‘L’ over the hood mount (with the ball facing outward) and thread the factory hardware through the plate and hood mount into the hood, ensuring you line the hood back up with the mount for good fitment when the hood is close. Same torque specs of 20ft/lb (~25nm) for these bolts.

    6. With the 13mm wrench, secure the mounting ball to the plate.

    7. With a screwdriver or pick, slide the retaining clips outward to install the cylinder onto the ball features on the plate. Install the cylinder end onto the ball on the hood plate, and slide the locking clip back down into place.

    8. Then place the rod end over the ball end in the engine bay and secure the locking clip. For the moment, the single cylinder should be enough to hold the hood in place while you work on the other side.

    10. Repeat the previous steps with the plates labeled ‘R’ on the side with the hood strut, and you're done!
